Common candle making issues with silicone molds & how to solve

  1. Leaking issue - this may happen with 3D molds that have cuts for easy release when the rubber bands are too tight or too loose or when you don’t have enough rubber bands to hold the mold.
    How to solve:
method 1:  line up the cuts well, add more rubber bands method 2: line up the cuts well, use plastic wrap ( kitchen cling wrap) to wrap the mold well then add rubber bands.
  2. Candles get stuck, cannot get out                                                       This is actually a wax issue, not mold issue. Choose the right wax for silicone molds. Some waxes designed for containers won’t work well with molds. Beeswax works the best, paraffin wax and some other hard pillar wax will work too.
  3. Candles come out with broken parts - this mostly happens when you demold too early, or too late ( the wax is too cool), or you are using a brittle wax, or the broken parts are delicate themselves which needs some special care and needs to demold at the right time.
How to solve: 1. Make sure you are using the right wax. Beeswax is recommended for the molds with intricate designs . 2. Demold when the wax is cool to touch.  3. If you put the mold in freezer to cool, do not keep in there too long, the wax will get brittle, do not put in freezer right after you pour when the wax is still hot. Put in freezer after the wax is set.
  4. Candles come out with lines.          Those lines are called jump lines. It usually happens when your pouring temperature is too low.
  5. Candles come out with lots tiny bubbles.  This usually happens when you pour too fast, too hot or your mold ( your room temperature) is too cool.              How to solve: try warm up your mold with a heat gun before pouring, pour slow & steady ( not too slow) at the right temperature. With big smooth pillar molds, you can also try grease your molds with a thin layer of olive oil first.
  6. Candles break or crack in the mold during cooling.  This usually happens with some specific shape - a figure with a much smaller part like neck or waist, or pillar designed with a much smaller part , or a long 2D taper break/ crack in the middle.                            This usually happens when pour too fast, or too hot                                        How to solve: warm up the mold well especially the smaller parts , pour slow & steady at the right temperature.
